Months of planning genetics, caring for litters, and evaluating prospects all lead to one important moment: sale season. While producing quality livestock remains the foundation of every successful operation, getting those genetics in front of the right buyers requires just as much intention. Today’s show pig families have countless options when searching for their next project, and the operations that consistently stand out are often those that communicate their offering well before the week of sale day.
Marketing a sale does not always require a large budget, professional equipment or a background in communications. Instead, it requires preparation and a willingness to set time aside to be intentional. Whether your pigs are sold through an online auction, live sale, or private treaty, thoughtful promotion can help ensure your hard work reaches the families looking for exactly what you have to offer.
Start Early
A successful sale season begins weeks before the sale itself. As a breeder, you do not have to wait until the pictures are taken or the catalog is released to begin promoting your offering. By then, many families have already started planning which sales they want to attend and where they hope to purchase their projects.
Creating anticipation throughout the weeks leading up to a sale keeps your operation on the buyer’s mind and gives families time to plan. Announcing your sale date early, sharing updates as pictures become available and reminding buyers as the sale gets closer all help build awareness. Instead of relying on a single announcement, your marketing can serve as an ongoing conversation that keeps your sale visible throughout the busy season.
Use Available Marketing Channels
Today’s buyers discover sales in many different ways. Some rely on Facebook or Instagram, while others follow online sale calendars, receive text messages from breeders or hear about upcoming sales through friends and fellow exhibitors. Since every buyer gathers information differently, breeders should avoid depending on just one method of promotion.
Social media remains one of the most valuable tools available and can reach people in many different locations, but it should complement, not replace, other methods of communication. Listing your sale in industry publications, reaching out to previous customers, encouraging others to share your sale information, and maintaining a website can increase visibility. The easier it is for buyers to come across your sale, the greater the opportunity to attract new interest. After all, buyers can’t attend a sale they never hear about.
First Impressions Matter
For many potential buyers, the first interaction with your operation happens online. Before they walk through your barn or visit with you on the phone, they have likely seen your photos or videos on social media or viewed your sale listing.
This is one of many reasons quality visuals have become one of the most valuable investments a breeder can make. Clear photographs, well-lit videos and clean presentation allow buyers to evaluate livestock with confidence, while reflecting the pride you take in your operation. Fortunately, professional equipment is not required. Natural lighting, a clean backdrop and taking the time to ensure pigs are comfortable before photographing or filming can dramatically improve the final product.
Strong visuals do more than showcase good livestock; they encourage buyers to stop scrolling, take a closer look and remember your sale among the many others taking place throughout the same season.
Make Information Easy to Find
Even the strongest marketing campaign can fall short if buyers are left having to search for basic information. Promotional posts should clearly communicate the details someone needs to participate, including but not limited to the sale date, time, location/platform, catalog availability and contact information.
It is not ideal for buyers to have to search through multiple posts to find a sale link or wonder where to go for additional information. Keeping these details consistent across every platform creates a more professional experience and, more importantly, eliminates confusion. When information is easy to access, potential buyers are more likely to stay engaged and follow through with attending or bidding.
Stay Consistent
Maintaining an active presence throughout the weeks leading up to a sale helps keep your offering in front of diverse potential buyers. As excitement builds, continue to share new information that highlights different aspects of your sale. Feature individual lots you’re most excited about, share updated photos or videos as pigs continue to change, remind buyers when the catalog becomes available and provide timely updates as sale day approaches.
Consistency keeps your sale relevant during a busy season when buyers are seeing information from numerous breeders every day. Remaining visible without overwhelming your audience helps keep your sale at the viewer’s minds while making purchasing decisions.
Highlight Success
One of many effective ways to market your operation is by highlighting the success of previous customers in recent years. Families often appreciate seeing how pigs from your program have performed for families like them, whether at a county show, jackpot, Texas major or national event.
Share your backdrop photos, customer testimonials and exhibitor accomplishments to provide prospective buyers with real and raw examples of your program’s success. While every family and project is unique, showcasing these achievements helps reinforce confidence in your genetics and demonstrates the long-term value your operation has provided to past customers.
“We believe maximizing a pig’s presentation when they leave our place sets the standard for how it should be cared for at yours. First impressions become lasting expectations,” said Cameron Knight of Knight Show Pigs. “Every pig we market is a blueprint for the level of care, attention to detail, and daily commitment we hope every family continues. Presenting our pigs at their very best isn’t just about making a sale—it’s about demonstrating the standard required to maximize their potential. Excellence is built through consistency!”
Continue Learning After Every Sale
No two sale seasons are exactly alike for any breeder or buyer, which makes every year an opportunity to improve. Once the final pig has been sold, take time to evaluate your marketing efforts. Consider how buyers learned about your sale, which posts generated the most engagement and what questions were asked most often throughout the season. Those are observations that can provide valuable insight when planning next year’s promotion. It may seem far away, but it is never too early to start road mapping your plans and new ideas.
Successful breeders are constantly looking for ways to improve. Not only measuring improvement in increased sale holes and banners, but also in how they communicate with current and future customers.
More Than Marketing
Marketing is not about having the flashiest graphics or posting most often on the most platforms. At its core, it is about making sure the right people know about your sale and have the information they need to participate with confidence and ease.
Every breeding operation has something uniquely valuable to offer. By planning ahead, communicating consistently, and presenting your livestock professionally, you can increase the visibility of sales and connect with more families looking for quality show pig projects and experiences.
Long before the first trailer pulls into the driveway and the first bidder number is handed out, sale season has already begun. Taking the time to market your sale with intention can make a meaningful difference in expanding your reach, strengthening your reputation and creating new opportunities for your operation year after year.
